"This is a story about an ordinary teddy bear. When he was made they found something wrong with him and threw him away, like a piece of rubbish, into an old dark store room. Then from outer-space a spotty man brought him to life with his cosmic dust. He took him to a magic cloud where Mother Nature gave him special powers. That bear became... SuperTed!"

The show was originally a Welsh language show, commissioned by S4C and produced by Siriol Productions and Kalato Ltd, which was later dubbed in to English. The show was first broadcast in November 1982 and comprised 37 episodes.

Another 13 episodes were produced by Hanna-Barbera under the new title "The Further Adventures of SuperTed" in 1992. This new series was quite different in tone, with a new voice cast (retaining Jon Pertwee as Spotty, Danny Cooksey as SuperTed), some new characters, a new theme tune and SuperTed was American.

  • Spottyman - SuperTed's bumbling companion, a yellow man covered in green spots, from planet Spot
  • Blotch - Spotty's sister
  • Texas Pete - SuperTed's nemesis, a cowboy
  • Skeleton - One of Texas Pete's henchmen, a camp skelton
  • Bulk - Another of Texas Pete's henchmen, a very fat man
  • Mother Nature - Mother Nature, portrayed as a witch or fairy that grants SuperTed magical powers
